Аннотация: В работах о советском кино принято описывать приход в него звука как момент кризиса и провала, момент, когда золотой век советского авангардного кино и монтажной школы внезапно подошел к концу. Советской кинопромышленностью часто пренебрегают как «технологически отсталой», сосредоточиваясь на проблеме перехода как на одной из попыток «догнать и перегнать» американскую киноиндустрию. Целью этой книги является рассказать историю, отличную от обычного нарратива о советской отсталости. Автор показывает, что «долгий переход» к звуку дал советским кинематографистам возможность теоретизировать и экспериментировать с новой звуковой технологией способами, которые были недоступны их западным коллегам из-за рыночных сил и зависимости от запросов аудитории. Эти ранние эксперименты со звуком – многие из которых остаются неизвестными – могут немало рассказать нам о том периоде культурных потрясений, когда Советский Союз переходил от революционных двадцатых к сталинским тридцатым.
