Аннотация: Книга Кати Дианиной переносит нас в 1860-е годы, когда выставочный зал и газетный разворот стали теми двумя новыми пространствами публичной сферы, где пересекались дискурсы об искусстве и национальном самоопределении. Этот диалог имел первостепенное значение, потому что колонки газет не только описывали культурные события, но и определяли их смысл для общества в целом. Благодаря популярным текстам прежде малознакомое изобразительное искусство стало доступным грамотному населению – как источник гордости и как предмет громкой полемики. Таким образом, изобразительное искусство и журналистика приняли участие в строительстве русской культурной идентичности. В центре этого исследования – развитие общего дискурса о культурной самопрезентации, сформированного художественными экспозициями и массовой журналистикой.
